The hair and beauty industry is booming
FG_AUTHORS: Who Can Cut It?
Concerns over Brexit may have put large sectors of business on hold and impacted on several industries but it seems the beauty industry is booming.
The Local Data Company’s Retail and Leisure Trends Report 2017/18 revealed that more barbershops and beauty salons opened in 2017, than any other type of business.
There were 624 (net – the number of openings minus number of closures) barbershop openings in 2017 and 388 (net) beauty salons, while nail salons also made the top five with 176 (net) openings.
Unsurprisingly health clubs made it into the top 10 for the first time, with 100 (net) opening during the last year, as the recent gym obsession continues to grow.
The rise in the number of barbershops opening is nothing new though, the numbers have increased dramatically since 2012, with 2221 (net) opening, which is higher than any other business sector.
Over the last five years, beauty salons accounted for 1766 (net) openings, while there were 1186 (net) hair and beauty salons opening up.
Hilary Hall, NHF’s chief executive, said: “While this report provides evidence of the continuing growth and popularity of barbershops, beauty salons and nail bars, it does mean that these businesses face ever-increasing competition in a tough marketplace.
“To stay ahead of their competitors, they need to work harder than ever on their brand, on delivering an outstanding client experience, investing in their teams and keeping tight control on costs in order to turn a profit.”
