5 ways to stay looking faboulous this winter
FG_AUTHORS: Who Can Cut It?
As the seasons change, so should our beauty regime not just because it’s a good time to tidy up our makeup bag and throw away anything which is past its best but also because a change in weather can have a dramatic impact on our appearance.
At this time of year I always have to tweak my beauty regime as my skin and hair dries out quicker, thanks to the colder weather and central heating. The wind and bitterly cold temperatures leaves my eyes streaming, while my hair also needs a bit more help to save it from the wind and rain.
So, what should we be doing to stay looking fabulous this winter?
Preparation is key
The three-step skincare regime is more important than ever during the winter, so I’m sorry to say it’s time to put away the lazy option face wipes and you’re face really will thank you for it. We all know they are not the gentlest of products on the market and in winter they could be doing far more harm than good, as they dry your skin out even more than normal.
So, instead invest in a good gentle cleanser and if you have sensitive skin at the best of times, make sure you avoid any product with perfume, which could irritate your skin.
Right now I’m loving the Liz Earle, Cleanse and Polish but I also have a makeup removal oil on the go too, which not only removes even the most stubborn of waterproof mascara’s but also hydrates my skin. I’m using DHC Deep Cleansing Oil at the moment and it leaves my skin looking and feeling super clean.
Invest in a more heavy duty moisturiser
If you’re like me and the summer glow has well and truly gone and your skin has lost it’s v ava voom it’s time to swap your moisturiser for something which locks in hydration and helps form a strong barrier on your skin against the elements.
During the summer I was loving a tinted moisturiser ( but right now that’s not even touching the sides so it’s time to switch to a moisturising cream, over a lotion, or even an oil.
If you like multitasking products NUXE Huile Prodigieuse is a great addition to any makeup bag – to give you that extra moisture wherever you need it. You can use it on your face, body and hair all year long and the plant oils and Vitamin E means there’s nothing in it to irritate your skin.
Your hands also need that extra help right now and I still always go back to Clarins Super Restorative Hand Cream to keep mine soft but if you need a cheaper alternative then there’s the unscented Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Concentrated Hand Cream.
At this time of year when your makeup is at the mercy of the weather, cream eyeshadows and blushers are a much better option than the powder variety. They can be drying on their own and can fade (or crease) quickly so cream colours are the best bet although a good eyeshadow primer such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion will mean you can still use your favourite shades.
Wipe away the tears
If like me your eyes and mascara in particular suffer in the winter months, as the cold and wind causes an endless stream of tears, now is the time to invest in a good waterproof mascara wish staying power.
The problem is rarely finding something to stay where it’s meant to but instead it’s hard to find a waterproof mascara which also lengthens and adds volume – and I need both to make it look like I even have eyelashes.
After years of searching I now stick with one of the cheapest on the market – Essence I Love Extreme Volume Mascara Waterproof from Wilko.
Tame the locks
It’s not only your skin which needs extra help at this time of year, but also your hair which can also dry out, leaving it more liable to breakage and frizziness.
Now is the time to add a hair oil to your regime, and despite trying several options Moroccanoil is still my favourite, as it stops your locks from drying out and seals the cuticles leaving your hair smoother and stronger.
I also use a deep cleaning shampoo and conditioner once a week so help replace any lost moisture in both my hair and scalp. The TIGI Bed Head Urban Antidotes Recovery Tween Shampoo & Conditioner are my go to products the moment as they both give a rush of hydration that gets stressed-out tresses back to their best.
